| Whether it is a Weim eating out of
a garbage can or a Weim that the owner ‘just no longer has
time for’, the number of Weimaraners in need of new homes
is growing at staggering rates. In 2000, WCA Rescue Committee placed
over 600 Weims in new homes. Some of the reasons for turning family
pets over to WCA Rescue include divorce, new home, lack of knowledge
about the breed, new baby, and the list goes on and on. Weims are
becoming more and more popular among the general pet owner population.
Why the increased popularity? Weims have been shown in television
commercials, Sesame Street, and in calendars dressed up in human
clothes. To support the increased popularity, breeders are breeding
for quantity not quality. Without adequate education from breeders
and local Weim clubs, dog owners find themselves in a situation
they can not handle. The only good news is that there are families
that want to adopt these unwanted Weims.
WCA Rescue Committee is a varied group of Weim lovers that help
find unwanted Weims new homes. The rescue committee is responsible
for taking dogs from homes that no longer want them and from shelters
that can not place them. The volunteers foster these dogs, transport
them, care for them, and eventually place them in their new homes.
All dogs entering the rescue program are given a health check and
have an AKC Companion Animal Recovery microchip implanted in them.
This microchip helps to ensure that if the dog is lost or stolen,
it can be returned to its owner or returned back to WCA Rescue.
